Christian has had an obsession with Abe Lincoln every since the Civil War Reenactment we participated in years ago. Our local history center is having our former president as the guest speaker to talk about the Battle of Gettysburg! Of course we are going to try to make it with the d'Aulaire book in tow so Christian can get a famous signature! Thanks to a great book we've already learned so much about his life. In addition to the d'Aulaire book (which we read over a span of a few days), I'm planning on ordering another Kane Miller title for Christmas. It's called Old Abe: Eagle Hero.
Here is a review from an Usborne consultant:
This is a true story about an eagle (yes, named after Abe Lincoln) who was a mascot for a Union troop during the civil war, told by an ancestor of one of the men in that troop (one who carried him, I believe). Amazing watercolor illustrations that take you back to time & place, a great story and very educational. I highly recommend it!
